ASPA Wastewater Lift Station – Flowmeters and RTUs

Client: ASPA – American Samoa Power Authority

Project: Mains Powered Flowmeters and RTU’s

Products: Optiflux 2050W, PT Orange RTU and Palette Software

Brands: KROHNE, Metasphere

Key data now gathered by ASPA:

  • Volume flow metering
  • Instantaneous Flowrate
  • Hourly, Daily, Weekly and Monthly Volume Flow through the lift stations

Pacific Technologies (NZ) Ltd was contacted by ASPA to provide a solution to measure and monitor the flow rates and volume flow through the wastewater line at their Lift Stations. This allows ASPA to determine if the pump is running optimally (at rated capacity in GPM) for each Lift Station and to them build a model for their I&I (Inflow and Infiltration).  For this, Pacific Technologies solution was to install and commission an Optiflux 2050 flowmeter and a PT Orange RTU for each site that communicates with a cloud-based SCADA system for remote access. Along with installation and commissioning, Pacific Technologies provided training to ASPA on all three products (Optiflux 2050, Point Orange and Palette) as a part of our aim to leave our clients in a position to understand, operate, troubleshoot and maintain the units.

The KROHNE Optiflux was selected because of its range of sizes and for all water and wastewater applications with conductive liquids. Other key features are highlighted below:

  • Bi-directional flow measurement over a wide dynamic range
  • Tropicalized electronics for use in areas with extreme humidity and chances of flooding
  • Standard wet calibration
  • PP or hard rubber liner: excellent chemical resistance
  • Available in customer-specific constructions
  • Tamper Proof
  • Full Bore Design: No moving parts, no wear, no pressure loss

The Metasphere Point Orange was selected as it a reliable battery powered RTU that can be configured to connect to a SCADA system, and more importantly, can be configured to communicate with Metasphere’s cloud-based SCADA system, Palette. Key features of the Point Orange are listed below:

  • Realtime remote monitoring of up to 5 programmable IO channels, allowing over 100 possible combinations of digital inputs, counter inputs, analogue inputs
  • IP68 enclosure, suitable for submersion to 4m for 4 days with a range of mounting options for in-field deployment
  • Inbuilt submersion sensor – to detect when the unit is submerged underwater
  • Communicates with either Medina or DNP3 Masters
  • Built-in quad-band GSM/GPRS modem or combined Tri-band 3G and quad-band GSM/GPRS modem
  • Internal antenna and optional external antenna
  • Lithium battery with an expected life of 5+ years
  • Flexible integrated installation bracket
  • Automatic external power source detection
  • Automatic switching between an internal and external antenna
  • Local diagnostic points such as GSM signal strength, temperature, battery voltage
  • Read data from Modbus slaves
